Dear reader,
Long time, no see! No excuses, really. Just felt like I had nothing to share. But now I do!
First up, a video game recommendation: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
WOW. Wow wow wow wow wow. This game is worth the hype and so much more. If you like RPGs (and maybe even if you don’t), play it now. Off you go. And avoid spoilers like the plague because they’ll ruin the experience.
Everything about this game is peak tier: the writing, the peformances, the music, art direction, and gameplay. But as an author, I especially took away many lessons in storytelling:
The power of a good hook and a classic structure
Craftsmanship in every detail
A unique setting
Trusting the intelligence of your audience
Emotional resonance
Strong themes
Setup and payoff that makes events feel earned
Turning points with incredible impact
That’s all I’ll say. Just go play it. Seriously.
Perhaps a little less hype-worthy in my opinion: K-pop Demon Hunters.
Yep. I watched this movie because the concept sounded fun. It was what I expected it to be, a fun piece of fluff with some good bops. But it seems like this movie is actually really popular. I’m surprised! Can’t complain. I’ve had quite the boost in book sales for my K-drama inspired series this month, and I fully believe it has been driven by the success of this movie.
This month I’m reading the Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer. I’m over half way through, and I’m still not sure whether I’m enjoying it or not. It’s kind of cosy and whimsical… but I’m just finding the protagonist overly sweet and goody-good. I will reserve my final judgement until the end.
On the writing front, I’m plodding along, slow and steady as usual.
