Dear reader,
I was recently updating my LinkedIn profile (more on this in a sec) when I noticed one of my connections—a former colleague—has just started a very impressive, very high-level role with a company in London. I couldn’t help but be a little envious. I knew her when she was just starting out—she was even a little bit more junior than I was at the time (younger than me, too!) and now she’s way, way, way ahead of me in her career. It got me thinking, if I had stuck with what I was doing, working in the media/advertising industry, could I be where she is now?
At the end of the day… No. I don’t think so. And would I even want to be where she is now? Probably not.
Though I was very good at my job, I did not have the passion or drive to reach that level. I even bombed a job interview because the interviewers could obviously tell I was more passionate about book writing than working in media.
The former colleague has stuck it out and made a name for herself and deserves her high position. Meanwhile, I’m pretty happy with the small, modest, bookish life I have. I write, I read, and I work for a bookstore. No fancy job title or big salary, but I get to have a relatively stress-free lifestyle doing stuff I like.
Which brings me back to LinkedIn. I’ve updated my profile because I’ve started doing a bit of freelance proofreading and copyediting alongside working on my own books. I kind of soft-launched Fable Editing last year, but life was busy, and I didn’t do as much with it as I wanted to. This year will be different! I’m planning to get qualified in copyediting, but my chosen course isn’t open for enrolments yet. In the meantime, I’m happy to offer reduced rates while I continue to build up my portfolio and reviews. So, if you’re an author (I know there are some of you here!), see below for more information ⬇️
On the writing front, I’m happy to report that I’ve got my mojo back after a bit of a downturn in motivation. It’s all come down to self-discipline and not letting myself get distracted by social media during my precious two-hour daily writing block. It’s really as simple as that.
No K-drama update this week. I’m still watching Crazy Love. Almost finished. I’m clearly not inhaling this one like the others I’ve recently watched. Not to say it isn’t good. I’ve just been enjoying other leisure-time activities too, like playing Valkyria Chronicles and reading Inspector Gamache novels 📚
So, all in all, I’m doing well, and I’ve let all that job envy go. Not everything is about money and status, wouldn’t you agree? Let me know your thoughts.
-Sara
PS. Have you been following the Silver Elite controversy? I really enjoyed Cari’s video. I don’t plan on reading it myself, but I’m very interested in how and why a book like this can just blow up like it has.
