Discovering a new guilty pleasure: Hammer movies
I'm DECADES late to this party, but here we are
It was winter solstice here in the southern hemisphere on Thursday. I decided to make a new tradition in my household to mark the occasion. T jokingly suggested mulled wine (we don’t drink alcohol), but a hot beverage seemed like a good idea.
And thus, my new winter solstice tradition was born: homemade hot chocolate. This is the recipe I used.
Along with the hot chocolate, I made these delicious peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, and we settled in for the evening, watching a cosy movie.
Our movie of choice? The final movie in the Hammer series of Dracula films, The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires.
T and I have been slowly working our way through all of the Hammer Dracula and Frankenstein films. These movies are so much fun! Campy, tropey, silly, gothic fun. I didn’t know horror films could be so cosy and comforting. They are my new (old) guilty pleasure.
Fun fact: If you watch enough Hammer films, you WILL develop a crush on Peter Cushing. I know from personal experience. Even T finds him charming.
As far as I’m concerned, the Dracula and Frankenstein movies are right up there in the comfort film rankings with Studio Ghibli anime, Jane Austen adaptations, and nineties romcoms.
What are some of your top comfort movies/TV shows/books?
