My desk is where I do 90% of my writing, and honestly, where I spend most of my time during the day. For that reason, I like to have it set up nicely! Today for something a little different, I thought I’d give a little tour…
Desk: Deskbird 1500x800mm size in the Classic Walnut colour with white frame. This is an electronic standing desk. I don’t use the standing function nearly as much as I should, but it’s great to have it available.
Chair: Secondhand and I got it for free. I have no qualms about it.
Drawers: Secondhand. Perfect for extra storage since the desk doesn’t have built-in drawers.
Keyboard: Hands down my favourite part of my setup is my precious, precious keyboard. I have a Niz Atom 68 with Bluetooth and I love it to bits. It's super tactile, and the keys make a lovely raindrop type of sound, which I vastly prefer to the click-clack of other mechanical keyboards. I can’t believe that up until the end of 2020 I had never used a separate keyboard for a laptop. Now, I’ll never go back.
Mouse: Logitech Pebble. It does the job, and I don't need a fancier mouse than this.
Laptop: 2017 Macbook Air. It's still going strong, though the battery life isn't what it used to be. I usually just keep it plugged in. Hard drive space can also be a struggle.
Monitor: Secondhand and free. It's not very good at all, but buying a new one isn't a priority right now.
Headphones: Bose Soundlink II around-ear wireless headphones. I have had these for several years now, and they are great. I recently replaced the ear cushions with new ones off Aliexpress. My headphone stand is also from Aliexpress.
Pens: My favourite pens are Uni Jetstream and Zebra Sarasa. I use Zebra Mildliners for highlighting. I usually pick up pens and other bits of stationery from local Japanese shops, but I recently did a bulk order off Aliexpress for more Sarasa pens.
Planner: Filofax Malden personal size with day per page Filofax insert. I loooove this binder, but I have been very lax this year with using it. I don’t love the inserts. I’m trying to design my own custom planner for 2023.
Notebook: Large black lined Moleskine. I’ve had this for years and still haven’t filled it up yet. You can’t really go wrong with Moleskine.
Glasses: Felix Gray Roebling in Sazerac Crystal. I use them to protect my eyes from blue light since I spend so much time staring at a screen. Could be placebo effect, but I do think they make a difference. They look cute too.
Hand cream and lip balm: I always have these on hand. I’m not picky about brand, as long as they work well.
Candle: I light it whenever I write in the evening.
Poster: This is my 2022 vision board, which is on the wall above my desk. I collected images I liked on Pinterest, then I arranged them all on an A2 size document in Affinity Publisher, then got it printed out. I think I’ll do this again with new images for 2023.
So, that’s my workspace... One day I’d like to have my own writing studio with a beautiful view of nature and space for lots of bookcases, but for now, I can make do with what I’ve got - it’s a big step up from my previous workspace situation.
