Dear reader,
For the longest time, it’s been a dream of mine to have an office (“writing studio”) of my own, where I can write undisturbed for long periods and achieve flow more easily.
My dream came true when I moved into my new house last year. No more having to share an office with my partner who likes to laugh loudly at YouTube videos and click click clack clack on his mouse and mechanical keyboard in the most irritating manner. Now I have peace and quiet (Well, except when T comes to annoy me because he's bored—at least I've taught him to knock first).
I won't pretend the new situation has supercharged my productivity, but it has definitely helped quite a bit!
I bought a new computer and monitor in the Boxing Day sales. My 2017 Macbook Air was starting to show its age, plus I got sick and tired of having to disconnect my laptop from my setup to bring it to my day job once a week, then reconnect it—fishing up the monitor cable and adaptor from under my desk and feeding it back up because it has inevitably fallen down, and plugging everything back in again.
I bought a Mac Mini M4, an LG ultrawide curved monitor, and a Dell monitor arm. The Macbook has been relegated to my day job and travel only.
Apart from the new gear, I still have all my old faithfulls—Deskbird standing desk, Bose headphones, Logitech Pebble mouse, and Niz Atom 68 keyboard (my precious).
So my desk setup is pretty much sorted, but the rest of my office is still a work in progress. The walls are bare. I want to get a big set of drawers for storing stationery and office supplies, and I want to install floating bookshelves to display all my books.
Next week I have to give up my office for a couple of days because it doubles as a guest room (with sofa bed). Not ideal, but it’s rude to not let your parents stay with you now and then—especially when they did help a litle bit towards the house deposit.
So I guess it’s not 100% my own room after all. But close enough.
